The extra two inches settle more of this comparison than the similar names suggest. Amazon’s Fire HD 10 gives films, comics, webpages and split-screen apps enough room to breathe, then backs that advantage with a 1920 × 1200 display and an eight-core processor. The Fire HD 8 counters with an 8-inch body that is substantially easier to hold, slip into a small bag and use when standing or traveling.

Neither is a conventional Android tablet. Both are built around Fire OS, Amazon’s Appstore and Amazon’s services, without official Google Play support. That shared restriction matters more than either processor if your essential apps include Google software, a regional streaming service, a particular game or a work tool absent from Amazon’s store. The larger model is the better Fire tablet, but it does not escape the compromises of being a Fire tablet.

This comparison covers the 2024 Fire HD 8 with 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage, plus the 2023-generation Fire HD 10 listing with 4GB of memory and 32GB of storage. The years, capacities and ASINs matter because Amazon reuses product names across generations and configurations. The Fire HD 10 wins everywhere the larger body helps

Screen quality is the cleanest victory. The Fire HD 10 spreads 1920 × 1200 pixels across 10.1 inches, while the Fire HD 8 uses 1280 × 800 across 8 inches. The larger tablet therefore provides both more physical canvas and greater pixel density. Video can display at Full HD resolution, fine text looks cleaner, comics need less zooming and dense websites feel less pinched.

The distinction is not merely “big versus small.” A larger low-resolution panel could have magnified flaws, but the HD 10 receives the sharper specification as well as the greater area. Its 16:10 shape suits widescreen video especially well. It remains a basic 60Hz LCD rather than a premium display, with no OLED contrast or established outdoor-brightness advantage, yet it clears the standard required of an inexpensive indoor entertainment screen.

The Fire HD 8’s display is adequate for a downloaded show, a Kindle novel with enlarged type or a casual game. Its 189-pixel-per-inch image is visibly softer, though, and small text exposes that weakness faster than video does. Reflections further reduce its appeal outdoors. An e-ink Kindle is the more comfortable prose reader, while the Fire HD 10 is the more satisfying color reader; the HD 8 wins only when physical comfort outweighs either specialization.

Portability is the Fire HD 8’s decisive argument

The Fire HD 8 measures 7.94 by 5.40 inches and weighs 11.88 ounces. Those numbers translate into a tablet that can occupy the gap between a phone and a full-size slate without demanding a large bag. It is better suited to one-handed reading, cramped airplane seats and situations where holding a ten-inch screen becomes tiresome.

Retained owners describe exactly that advantage: one found a seven-inch tablet too small and a ten-inch model too difficult to hold, while another carried the HD 8 instead of a more expensive iPad Air because it fit a small crossbody bag. Those accounts do not make eight inches universally ideal, but they show why the smaller model survives an otherwise lopsided specification comparison.

The HD 10 weighs roughly 434 grams, or a little over 15 ounces. It is still portable, light for its screen size and practical in a backpack, but prolonged unsupported reading asks more of the wrist. The trade becomes obvious on a sofa: the larger model is much better once propped on a lap or stand, while the smaller one is easier whenever your hand must support the entire device.

Performance favors the HD 10, but neither belongs at work

Both target configurations include 4GB of memory, so the processor becomes the meaningful separator. The HD 8 uses a six-core MediaTek platform that handles streaming, ebooks, simple games and light browsing but can hesitate on complex websites, app launches and repeated switching. Extra memory makes this 4GB version more sensible than the 3GB base model; it does not turn modest silicon into a fast tablet.

The HD 10’s eight-core processor gives it a higher ceiling. Contemporary testing of the original 3GB version placed its multicore performance comfortably above the cheaper Fire HD 8 generation, even though it remained far behind an iPad. The target listing’s fourth gigabyte should provide additional breathing room, but the available record does not include target-specific benchmarks that would justify a precise speed claim.

Choose the HD 10 for routine split screen, busier web pages and games that sit above the most basic tier. Do not confuse “faster” with “fast.” Demanding 3D games, serious creative work, many browser tabs and dependable laptop replacement remain outside its convincing range. If work is the reason for buying, the useful comparison is not between these two Fires but between a laptop and a more capable tablet.

Battery is respectable on both, and charging is not

The Fire HD 10 came within 21 minutes of Amazon’s 13-hour claim in two controlled tests of the original 2023 hardware. Mixed use can pull it closer to nine or ten hours, particularly with high brightness or games, but it has enough endurance for a long flight or an afternoon of household use.

Exact-generation Fire HD 8 testing landed around nine to ten hours of full-brightness video, with varied use stretching roughly another hour. It should also cover a normal day, although Amazon’s maximum assumes a lighter workload than continuous bright-screen video.

Charging gives neither model bragging rights. The Fire HD 10 can take about four hours for a complete refill. The HD 8’s bundled 5W adapter can stretch the same chore to about five hours, although a compatible 15W USB-C charger reduced that wait substantially in exact-model testing. Good endurance softens this problem but does not make the included HD 8 charger less underpowered.

Fire OS makes this a family resemblance, not a side issue

The two tablets share the same fundamental software bargain. Kindle, Prime Video, Audible, Alexa and Amazon account features sit close to the surface. Major streaming services and Libby can cover a broad entertainment routine, while profiles and parental controls make either tablet useful in a shared household.

Google Play is not officially supported. Chrome, Gmail, Google Maps and Google’s other familiar apps are therefore absent from the normal out-of-box experience. Web versions can help, but they do not always reproduce the features or responsiveness of native apps. Amazon’s own recommendations, subscriptions and storefront elements also remain prominent even when lock-screen offers are removed.

Unofficial Google Play installation is possible, but it requires model-sensitive downloads from outside the supplied store and can introduce breakage or maintenance. Buy either Fire only if it already works with Amazon’s supported catalog. The Fire HD 10 wins because the better screen and stronger processor improve nearly everything people ask an entertainment tablet to do. The Fire HD 8 is not the cheaper version of the same experience; it is the deliberately smaller tool for readers and travelers who know that a ten-inch tablet will be left behind.
