The word “Plus” points in the wrong direction here. Amazon’s 2022 Fire HD 8 Plus was the better-equipped member of its own generation, with 3GB of RAM and Qi charging, but the specific standard Fire HD 8 in this comparison arrived in 2024 with 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. The newer standard model is therefore the stronger tablet for most people, even before software-support age enters the argument.

Do not mistake that victory for a broad endorsement of Fire tablets. Both devices use a soft 1280 × 800 display, both are limited by modest hexa-core processors, and neither officially supports Google Play. Their cameras are emergency tools, Fire OS keeps Amazon’s services and recommendations close at hand, and demanding games or serious work exceed the sensible brief. This is a contest between two compact Amazon entertainment devices, not a search for an inexpensive iPad.

Anyone who depends on Gmail, Chrome, Google Drive, Maps or a broad Android app catalogue should stop comparing these two and choose a conventional Android tablet instead. Installing Google Play unofficially can work, but it creates a version-sensitive maintenance job rather than turning Fire OS into supported Android. Amazon reused much of the same compact formula: an 8-inch LCD, a plastic body, microSD expansion, USB-C, a headphone jack and a claimed battery ceiling of up to 13 hours. That shared foundation makes the differences unusually easy to judge. The Plus has wireless charging and a stronger included wired adapter; the 2024 standard model has more memory, twice the internal storage in the configurations compared here and a release date two years later.

More memory matters more often than wireless charging

The Plus name once signaled the more comfortable Fire HD 8. Its 3GB of RAM was a meaningful improvement over the standard 2022 model’s 2GB, particularly when moving between simple apps. That historical comparison is no longer the relevant one. The 2024 configuration here has 4GB, so the old Plus loses the very advantage that made it easier to recommend within its own family.

Four gigabytes cannot rescue a slow processor from complex websites, demanding games or sustained multitasking. The screens produce a draw nobody should celebrate

Each tablet has an 8-inch IPS LCD with 1280 × 800 pixels at roughly 189 pixels per inch. It is enough for a television episode, an illustrated ebook, a recipe or casual browsing indoors. Fine text and detailed images look coarse beside a modern iPad or a sharp e-ink reader, while reflections and modest brightness make sunlight a hostile viewing condition.

The size itself remains compelling. An 8-inch tablet fits into bags that make a 10-inch model awkward, feels less tiring during a long reading session and provides a useful step up from a phone for video. It is less convincing for dense PDFs, magazines, split-screen work and webpages that demand frequent zooming. Neither model wins on photography or video calls. Both pair a 5MP rear camera with a 2MP front camera, and the matching numbers accurately predict a matching lack of ambition. They can scan a code, preserve a reference image or cover an occasional call in decent light. A current phone will usually produce a better result with less effort.

The Plus earns its name only while charging

Qi support gives the older model one distinct and coherent role. Place it on a compatible stand, leave Alexa information visible and lift it away whenever you want a book or video. That arrangement can be better than remembering to connect a cable, especially for a tablet shared around a kitchen or living room.

The catch is larger than the missing dock. If the tablet will normally charge beside a bed or in a travel bag, inserting a USB-C cable is not onerous enough to justify older hardware, less memory and half the internal storage. Wireless charging is valuable here as a usage pattern, not as a trophy specification.

The newer Fire HD 8 commits the opposite charging mistake. Its included 5W adapter can require about five hours for a complete refill in exact-generation testing, turning a routine charge into an overnight appointment. A compatible 15W USB-C adapter can cut the wait substantially, but needing another adapter weakens the simplicity of a budget purchase. Battery endurance on both devices is credible for a normal day of light entertainment; the standard model simply makes recovering from an empty battery much more annoying.

Fire OS is the shared deal breaker

The largest limitation has nothing to do with Plus branding. Amazon’s Appstore is the official software source on both tablets, and Google Play is not supported out of the box. Kindle, Audible, Prime Video and Alexa fit naturally, while major streaming services cover much of the entertainment brief. A routine built around Chrome, Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, Docs, Maps or less common Android apps encounters absences and web substitutes instead.

Customer reports illustrate why app compatibility must be checked rather than assumed. Owners have successfully sideloaded Google software onto the 2022 Plus, but the same record includes features that would not work and apps that required manually obtained packages. Amazon promotion remains part of the experience even when lock-screen advertising is removed. The winner still needs the right owner

Choose the 2024 Fire HD 8 when the intended job can be written in one short line: carry Kindle and Libby books, stream or download familiar entertainment, browse lightly and run a few uncomplicated games. It is especially defensible for travel because the small plastic body is easy to pack and less financially intimidating than a premium tablet.

Choose the 2022 Plus only if you already understand how the charging setup will fit your day. A kitchen information screen, bedside Alexa display or shared living-room tablet can benefit from returning to a powered stand after every use. If no such place exists, the Plus feature will sit unused while its lower memory and storage remain present every day.

Choose neither for school assignments, regular office work, creative software, demanding gaming, outdoor reading or a Google-dependent household.
